With the addition of eight sibling duels at the FIFA World Cup 2026, there are many interesting family stories associated with this coming event.
The introduction of a total of 48 teams for a total of 1,248 players over this sizeable North American region has led to a mixture of collective family pride as well as international rivalry amongst those pairs of brothers.
This division of family loyalty should create at least two opportunities for sibling head-to-head matchups in the knockout phase of the tournament.
Divided by the Badge
The best-known current examples of this new international soccer identity can be seen with Iaki and Nico Williams. Their parents came from Ghana; both brothers play their club football in Spain for Athletic Club, and Iaki chose to play for their parents' home nation, Ghana, while Nico chose Spain.
The same sort of situations will arise with Gula and Désiré Doué; Désiré will continue his developing career in the French national setup, while Gula was recently called up by Ivory Coast.
Other brothers we will be able to see in action will be Ghana's Derrick Luckassen Brobbey, who was a last-minute injury call-up, and his younger brother Brian Brobbey, who will be hoping to lead the Dutch attack. At the other end of the park, Australia will rely on defender Harry Souttar, while Scotland's representation will be from his brother, John.

United Under One Flag
For some other families, the World Cup is a family project. The Netherlands national team will be experiencing the thrill of the arrival of twins Quinten and Jurrin Timber. Head coach Ronald Koeman is looking forward to seeing both of these dexterous players in the starting lineup regularly and being one of the most fearsome family duos in international football.
Germany has a long line of top-level footballers, and for the first time in Didier Deschamps's squad, he has the twins Lucas and Theo Hernandez. This flexible defensive pair has been highly successful at the international level and will be essential for the deep run of Les Bleus in the tournament.
On the less favorite side of the tournament, the experienced midfielder Leandro Bacuna will lead Curaçao, with his brother Juninho Bacuna, under the supervision of the coach Dick Advocaat. However, Laros and Deroy Duarte are brothers, and both have their places in the midfield for Cape Verde, the Blue Sharks, who are ready for their world debut.
