The marathon’s finally wrapped up. After almost three years of tough qualifiers and 899 games played everywhere you can imagine, the lineup for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is locked in. And it’s big news: for the first time, 48 countries will head to North America between June 11 and July 19, 2026. Get ready for a tournament that’s set to be bigger, rowdier, and more welcoming than anything we’ve seen before.
A New Era: The 48-Team Revolution
The change from a 32- to a 48-team World Cup is not simply a number change; it represents a large cultural shift. In 1994, there were only 24 teams entered into the World Cup tournament held in the USA; however, by 2026, when the tournament will be held, the first group of teams (12) will have been able to compete through a new format being used for this event (the 2026).
There are many "Fairytale" type teams that will be able to enter this year, such as teams from Curacao, Uzbekistan, and Jordan, who will be entering their first-ever World Cup tournament!
The Final Pieces of the Puzzle
The drama hit its climax on March 31, 2026. It was a season in the playoffs full hour tense moments. Iraq scored 48th place and last to qualify for the World Cup by winning Bolivia 2-1 in Monterrey that evening. In the morning, the whole footballing world was stunned as Bosnia and Herzegovina kicked four-time champions Italy out of the tournament in the penalty shootout.
For the Azzurri, it will be the third consecutive time they will miss a World Cup tournament. Along with Italy, that group was filled with Sweden, Turkey, and Czechia after the final European playoffs were completed, while Jamaica and DR Congo were kind of a final between them. The DRC won it and qualified for their first tournament in 52 years.
