Mexico Start World Cup Campaign With Victory Over South Africa
Host nation Mexico began their 2026 World Cup on the front foot with a convincing 2-0 victory over South Africa in front of a sell-out Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Mexico started brightly, the tournament's opening goal finding the net inside the first ten minutes when Julian Quiones netted to give the hosts the lead.
South Africa had a mountain to climb, but things went further south when they were reduced to nine men via two red cards. Mexico commanded the remainder of the tie, and it was Ral Jimnez who clinched it with a blistering header in the second half. Julian Quiones was named Player of the Match for his opener.
South Korea Complete Comeback Against Czechia
In their second Group A game, the Republic of Korea pulled off a very impressive comeback win over Czechia in Guadalajara. The goal by Czechia in the 59th minute seemed to put them in a position to comfortably take all three points, but South Korea came back in a resilient manner after the break.
Hwang In-beom first brought the scores level and then it was Oh Hyeon-gyu who scored the decisive goal from the comeback to give the Asian team a great 2-1 triumph. The Player of the Match award went to Hwang In-beom, who also had a great influence on the game.
