Historic Clearance! Sanjay Bangar's Daughter Anaya Cleared to Play Women's Cricket

Anaya Bangar Cleared for Women's Community Cricket in Australia

In a landmark decision for inclusive sports, former Mumbai Under-19 cricketer Anaya Bangar has received official clearance to participate in women's community cricket across Australia. The breakthrough comes following her gender-affirming surgery completed in March, opening the door for her return to competitive action after months of uncertainty surrounding her athletic future.

Expressing her joy after receiving the news, Anaya shared that it felt like a monumental day, especially after going through a phase where she believed her cricketing career was over. She credited Cricket Australia for granting her a second chance to pursue her passion on the pitch.

Anaya is the daughter of former Indian all-rounder and national team coach Sanjay Bangar. While her immediate clearance grants her eligibility to play Premier Cricket in any Australian state or territory, competing at the highest professional level will require further medical compliance.

The Path to Elite Cricket and the WBBL

To step up to elite competitions like the Women's Big Bash League, Anaya must adhere to Cricket Australia's strict health and integrity guidelines. The board's regulatory framework dictates that her serum testosterone levels must remain below 10 nmol/L for a continuous period of at least 12 months.

Official correspondence from Cricket Australia's head of integrity, Jacqui Partridge, confirmed that Anaya will remain fully eligible for premier community competitions through March 2027. Once that timeline is reached, her entry into elite cricket will depend on providing blood tests upon arrival in Australia to verify that her testosterone levels satisfy the required threshold.

Anaya remains highly ambitious about her future prospects, emphasizing that strong performances in premier cricket could pave the way for a WBBL contract. She views this milestone as a significant step forward not only for her personal journey, but also for other transgender athletes aspiring to compete in organized sports.

Global Governance and BCCI Position

Anaya's clearance highlights the differing approaches taken by cricket governing bodies worldwide regarding transgender participation in women's sports. In late 2023, the International Cricket Council introduced policy changes that prohibited transgender women who experienced male puberty from competing in international women's cricket.

In contrast, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has yet to establish an official policy on the matter. According to BCCI sources, the board has not formally taken a stand because this represents the first instance of its kind in Indian cricket.

Anaya revealed that while her inquiries to the BCCI went unanswered, Cricket Australia proactively reviewed her medical records and research documentation. Her return to the crease in Australia marks a fresh chapter, bringing her one step closer to her ultimate goal of playing elite domestic cricket.
