As the neon lights of the Indian Premier League prepare to flicker back into action on March 28, the Punjab Kings' (PBKS) dugout teams will feel a real sense of ‘unfinished business’ after experiencing an 11-year playoff drought, which ended last year. During the playoffs, they made it to the finals but lost to Royal Challengers Bangalore by just 6 runs.
Their new captain Shreyas Iyer and head coach Ricky Ponting have developed tactical cohesion within the PBKS roster. As such, the Kings can now be considered a team that has established itself as a nucleus of the league, one that is seeking to earn its first star on the crest.
The Punjab Kings will play their first game of the 2026 season against the Gujarat Titans on March 31 at their new home, the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in New Chandigarh. Although captain Shreyas Iyer will lead the team, there is more depth in the PBKS roster this year than before.
The Explosive Top Order: Arya and Prabhsimran
The "Sadda Punjab" attitude is perfectly shown by their fearless opening pair. Priyansh Arya, the new star of 2025, comes back with a name as a "six-hitting machine." In his first season, Arya scored 475 runs at a rate close to 180, which includes a fast 39-ball century against CSK. His talent to break down powerplays removes the strain from the middle order right away.
His batting partner is the dynamic Prabhsimran Singh. The wicketkeeper-batsman has been a committed player of the team since 2019 but it was in 2025 that his performance really made people take notice.
Amassing 549 runs, Prabhisnman was one of the highest run-getters which means he provides the flexibility to play the fast bowlers as well as quality spinners which makes him a must-have player for the Red Devils.
Yuzvendra Chahal
Punjab's middle-order strategy has changed drastically with the addition of the IPL's all-time leading wicket-taker. Chahal can lure top-level batsmen with his ability and provide an aggressive wrist-spinner PBKS has missed in prior years.
Marco Jansen and the New Reinforcements
Every title-winning side requires a "silent killer" and in the case of PBKS, it is Marco Jansen. A towering figure at 6'8", the South African all-rounder delivers a rare left-arm angle along with bounce so steep that only very few attackers are able to get their shots off in the powerplay.
Having taken 36 wickets in the IPL and with his name being made as a lower-order finisher, Jansen is the player on whom Ponting counts in the most critical situations.
Arshdeep Singh
Arshdeep’s still the main guy leading the bowling charge. After snagging 21 wickets last season, his knack for landing those tough yorkers at the end is exactly what PBKS needs, especially when they’re trying to defend runs at Chandigarh, where big scores happen all the time.
People used to slam Punjab for all their constant reshuffles. But the 2026 squad feels different. This time, they kept their key players together and gave Shreyas Iyer some serious backup with players like Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh. The Kings now have a team that’s not just promising on paper; they deliver when it counts.
