With the IPL 2026 season opening on March 28, there are tactical discussions happening all over the country on an issue called the "spin-ball" dilemma. The majority of T20 cricket is usually considered a game for the batters and historically, middle overs in India have been dominated by spinners.
But with franchises locking on to their final starting XI's, three of the largest franchises in the league, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and Mumbai Indians (MI) have been left with some very fragile looking bowling attacks making their chances to field a strong XI a little more difficult.
Lucknow Super Giants
The biggest news coming out of the LSG camp is definitely about their main strike bowler, Wanindu Hasaranga. This Sri Lankan spinner, famous for his tricky googlies, is now considered a serious doubt for the whole tournament after suffering a hamstring tear during the T20 World Cup.
With Hasaranga likely out, the responsibility shifts to Digvesh Rathi, a young spinner who took 14 wickets last season and showed promise. Still, depending on a relatively inexperienced spinner to lead the attack on a pitch like Ekana Stadium, which favors spin, feels like a risky move.
Shahbaz Ahmed and M. Siddharth add some left-arm variation, but missing a seasoned, fit mystery spinner might leave captain Rishabh Pant in a tough spot, especially when the opposition starts to build momentum.
Mumbai Indians
The five-time champions have a different dilemma this time around: the "Rule of Four." Having Mitchell Santner as their main spin bowler, MI are fortunate to have a genuine world-class spinner who could really frustrate batsmen and slow down the scoring.
Nevertheless, his being a foreign spinner means that the team, which is traditionally inclined to have top-class foreign pacers and finishers, may find it a bit difficult to maintain the overall balance.
On the other hand, the Indian players - Mayank Markande, Raghu Sharma, and Atharva Ankolekar - have indeed all the potential to be great but at the moment, they are unable to deliver the kind of threat that with wickets Radically what KKR and RR have in their camps.
So, if Allah Ghazanfar and Will Jacks are sidelined because of team-balancing issues, MI could end up being a spin-bowling-bowled team that might have a hard time against the teams who on the other hand, play spins very well.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
For the Orange Army, they really missed out on some chances with their spin bowlers.SRH didn't get Ravi Bishnoi at the auction, so they are going into the 2026 season with very little proven IPL experience. We have some pretty good players, like Krains Fuletra, Praful Hinge, and Zeeshan Ansari.
But none of them have really gone through a super tough IPL playoff game or had to deal with a middle-order attack that's just going all out.Pat Cummins is still recovering from his back injury, and even though he and his fast bowlers are really good, SRH doesn't have a main Indian spinner.
This might make them lean too much on part-time bowlers or play defensively, which could put them in trouble on the slower pitches in Chennai or Kolkata.
