March 29th had an extraordinary event happen at Wankhede Stadium as Mumbai Indians (MI) finally exorcised their opening match curse by winning; they had not won an IPL season opening match since 2012.
This year, the team not only won their first game of the IPL season, but did so with a decisive victory over KKR by 6 wickets. A great game of cricket occurred with an even more moving moment happening with MI skipper Hardik Pandya and his family.
A Shielding Presence Amidst the Paparazzi Chaos
After the match ended, Hardik Pandya’s girlfriend, Mahieka Sharma, and his five-year-old son, Agastya, stepped out into the flood of cameras waiting outside. Paparazzi rushed in, snapping photos as the two tried to make their way out.
Then Mahieka instantly switched into protective mode, wrapping an arm around Agastya and steering him through the chaos. She didn’t lose her cool, just asked the photographers, politely but firmly, to stop using their flashes for Agastya’s sake.
"Sir, Agastya ke sath hoon, thoda side dijiye" (Sir, I am with Agastya, please move aside), she said
Rohit Sharma’s Masterclass Sets the Tone
MI had to score 221 fast and Rohit Sharma, the veteran, stepped up with a fearless start. Hard to ignore how he smashed 78 off just 38 balls, operating at a strike rate of 205.26. Six sixes lit up the pitch, leaving KKR's bowlers scrambling. The pace and precision showed he didn't just match his past he outpaced it.
Rohit, supported by Ryan Rickelton in his chase, who scored 81 runs, never allowed the run rate to go out of control. After the game, Hardik Pandya gave credit to Rohit, stating, "Whenever I’ve seen Ro play some shots, I think it opens everyone’s mouth. It was nothing short of exceptional."
They hadn’t kicked off a season with a win since 2012, when they beat CSK, so 2026 already has a fresh vibe. Shardul Thakur nailed it, grabbing three wickets and earning Player of the Match. With this kind of start, Mumbai Indians are telling everyone in the league their legacy isn’t fading; they’re back and ready to make some noise.
