Australia's top leg spinner, Adam Zampa, has caused shockwaves across cricket with his decision to play in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026, ahead of the highly revered and lucrative Indian Premier League (IPL). Zampa made this decision based on an honest and fair assessment of the time versus money versus other leagues in consideration around the world.
After being dropped by Sunrisers Hyderabad and viewing a hardcore two-month IPL schedule, Zampa felt that a specialist spinner is not paid well enough in the IPL to warrant such a commitment.
“To be brutally honest, for someone with my skill set, the money just isn’t there compared to what’s available for other skill sets. Considering the amount of time the IPL requires, it didn’t seem like a reasonable choice for me to keep playing.”
The Financial Reality
Despite Zampa having earnings from the IPL that have reached high amounts of ₹2.4 crore, he has not been a regular player in past seasons. On the contrary, with the Karachi Kings acquiring him for PKR 4.5 crore (~₹1.51 crore), he will be considered a key player as opposed to a backup player.
The decision worked right away. In a tense, low-scoring game with the Lahore Qalandars, Zampa led the charge, picking up 2 wickets for just 11 runs in his four overs. He read the tired Gaddafi Stadium pitch perfectly, grabbed the Player of the Match award, and pushed Karachi to the top of the standings.
Interestingly, Zampa's stay in Pakistan has made him a fan of local players. In fact, the passionate rivalry notwithstanding, Zampa had to admit that he likes Shaheen Shah Afridi very much. "One player I really enjoy watching is Shaheen Afridi. I played against him yesterday. He bowled really well and took four wickets. It always feels like something exciting is happening whenever he’s bowling," Zampa pointed out while Peshawar Zalmi had to concede defeat in the last match against Afridi's team.
