Victory with a Price! Shreyas Iyer Penalized by IPL After Punjab’s Nervy Last-Over Win!

Shreyas Iyer talking to the umpire during PBKS vs GT IPL 2026 match in New Chandigarh.

The IPL 2026 just brought its inaugural disciplinary rule into effect. The Punjab Kings (PBKS), following a grueling win over the Gujarat Titans (GT) at Mullanpur's New International Cricket Stadium, will have their joy diminished somewhat by the captain. Shreyas Iyer (captain) has been fined Rs 1,200,000 for slow over rates, which is the first fine of this season.

The Penalty: A Costly Slowdown in New Chandigarh

The energy in New Chandigarh was electric, but for Iyer, the real challenge was racing against the clock. The IPL doesn’t mess around when it comes to slow over-rates. Their Code of Conduct is clear: teams have to bowl their overs within a set time frame, or there will be a penalty.

Since it was the Kings' first offense of the 2026 season, Iyer only got away with the smallest fine. But having said that, pressure is on him now; if he commits a second offense, it is likely that he would be fined double, and the whole playing XI could be penalized.

On-Field Heroics: The Cooper Connolly Show

The scoresheet indicated a loss for Iyer, but the points table indicated a huge victory for the franchise. PBKS were in a difficult position after losing wickets in the middle of the innings when they had to chase down an imposing target of 162 and after a brilliant performance from Prasidh Krishna, who took 3 wickets and only conceded 29 runs.

Then comes the x-factor, Cooper Connolly, the real difference-maker. On his IPL debut, this young Australian looked unfazed by the moment. He smashed an unbeaten 72 from just 44 balls, and you could feel his calm under pressure. He didn’t just hang around; he took on tough bowlers like Rashid Khan and pulled off a shot people are still talking about. Thanks to Connolly’s gutsy batting, Punjab walked away with a three-wicket win and still had five balls left.

The Kings won't have much time to think about the fine or the celebrations. They are currently on their way to the "Den," the MA Chidambaram Stadium, to play against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on April 3.

After a heavy defeat against Rajasthan Royals by eight wickets, CSK would be eager to get back on the winning track. For Iyer, not only does he have to tactically outsmart the brilliance of Super Kings on the spinning Chepauk pitch, but also his bowlers have to be in a hurry while the clock is ticking.
