The high-energy atmosphere surrounding IPL matches has historically provided an opportunity for fans to participate in competitive rivalries, but this past week’s IPL match blurred the lines between what is acceptable as traditional fan banter during stadium events versus online forms of toxic fan behavior.
Shresta Iyer is the sister of Shreyas Iyer, captain of the Punjab Kings (PBKS), and she was drawn into a social media firestorm after the match was rained out at Eden Gardens.
The original intention of Shresta’s comment was to engage in some light-hearted ribbing of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but it quickly transformed into a terrifying experience filled with extreme online harassment & threats.
The "One-Point Gift" That Sparked the Outrage
The real story began after Monday's game between KKR and PBKS had to be called off because of really heavy rain. KKR was having a tough time, only managing 25 runs for 2 wickets, so each team just ended up getting one point. After all that, Shresta quickly put up a reel on Instagram, wearing PBKS colors, and poked fun at the home team for getting off so easily.
She joked in Punjabi with a clever one-liner, "Saade Punjabiyan da dil vadda hunda ae. Lo, ditta ek point." (We Punjabis have big hearts. So we gave you a point). The clip, although a tribute to her brother's new team, turned out to be a trigger for the angry KKR fans who considered the "gift" a mockery of their miserable season.
Disgusting! KKR fans threatening Shreyas Iyer’s sister Shresta after her light-hearted victory video.
This is the most toxic fanbase in IPL or any sport in the world.
Congrats to KKR & their fans on achieving new lows in toxicity. @KKRiders @iamsrk #PBKS #ShreyasIyer pic.twitter.com/ZfbG3H1zfY
From Banter to Brutality: The Dark Side of Fandom
The IPL is known for "cricketainment," and the ugly side of fandom was on display after Shresta’s video went up on YouTube, indicating that this was a very real and dangerous thing to do. Just hours later, her comment section was jammed with hate-filled messages. Shresta also received very aggressive threats through social media, which required her to take action immediately.
She took down the video on Thursday and then put out a statement about it. In her statement, she explained that deleting the video wasn't her way of admitting any fault, and she also mentioned how surprised she was by how much everything blew up. She explained that it was just supposed to be a light-hearted joke, and it's been really tough for her, getting not just a lot of negativity, but even some threats.
