There were two vastly differing narratives playing out on the lights at the Wankhede Stadium last night. On the field, it was the story of Mumbai Indians' determined and season-saving win against the Lucknow Super Giants. On the other hand, away from the pitch, the exclusion of their captain, Hardik Pandya from the line-up caused pandemonium and sparked endless speculation surrounding the future of leadership of the franchise.
With the able leadership and tactical nous of stand-in captain, Suryakumar Yadav, MI have kept their playoff qualification hopes mathematically alive, but the win has only aggravated the "Pandya vs. Management" conundrum amongst the Blue Army faithful.
The Leadership Crisis: Is Pandya Solely to Blame?
The five-time champions have struggled with maintaining their legendary consistency since Hardik Pandya took over as captain for the past three seasons. Currently in ninth place in the table, MI fans have been vocal about wanting to see a change in leadership. Former India opener Wasim Jaffer suggests taking a more nuanced approach.
While discussing on his YouTube channel, Jaffer stated that the captaincy may indeed be the target of criticism but the fault should be shared. "They have not lived up to the standards however you cannot lay the fault of this team playing so badly solely on Hardik Pandya, " Jaffer stated. He emphasized that the team has literally been weakened on the inside with the injuries of Rohit Sharma and a couple of stalwarts, Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult, who have hit the form which is uncharacteristic for them. Jaffer quickly brushed aside rumours about the captain being changed in the middle of the season and stated that the major restructuring in the IPL have been considered as post-tournament events only.
The Injury Mystery: Will Hardik Face RCB?
Although it was said that Pandya was benched due to a back spasm, the lack of transparency in the MI camp has sparked concern among fans. Opener Ryan Rickelton stated after the match that he too was unaware of the severity of their skipper's injury.
"I am not too aware of how serious it is," Rickelton stated to the media, although they hope that Pandya will make the trip to Raipur with the team. With a Net Run Rate of -0.649, and 6 points after 10 matches MI cannot afford any more losses.
The Road to Raipur: A Must-Win Clash
Before the match between MI and RCB, which takes place on May 10, all eyes will be on either Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav. If Hardik does not play, then the anxiety level in the middle order will be heightened as they play in the difficult conditions at Raipur. Therefore, MI will need to really show everyone that they are the 'Golden Standard' of the league instead of simply accumulating points.
