The Knight Riders’ fans will have to wait some more time before they can see Pathirana play for the first time in the colors of the KKR. Matheesha Pathirana, KKR's high-profile ₹18 crore signing, will miss the start of IPL 2026. He was expected to head the KKR bowling attack; however, he is still stuck in Colombo due to strict new fitness criteria through Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

SLC is putting national interests first with a tough new eight-week physical training program for all contracted players. The board isn’t budging on this. If players want a no-objection certificate (NOC), they have to pass strict fitness tests, like the mandatory 2 km sprint.
Sri Lanka is getting ready for their next international assignment towards the end of May, and their board is therefore taking advantage of this time to "switch player fitness back to normal."
As a result, big-name players such as Pathirana and Wanindu Hasaranga have been kept from going. In the case of Pathirana, the journey back is twice as hard, as he is still healing from a calf injury that he got during the T20 World Cup, which was held earlier this year.
The Missing Link in KKR’s Early Campaign
Recent reports state that Pathirana will likely join the KKR camp by April 6. This appears to be good news, but the timing of this event presents a huge logistical challenge to the coaching staff. KKR's first official match of the season is versus the Mumbai Indians (March 29), followed immediately by a match-up with Sunrisers Hyderabad (April 2).
If Pathirana arrives on the 6th, we anticipate that he will not have had adequate time for "match readiness" and "acclimatization" (to the conditions at the KKR camp and in India). Therefore, fans are likely to see a "match-ready Pathirana" no earlier than the second week of April.
There's no death-over specialist like Pathirana around to ease the strain on KKR's domestic pace battery. The 18 crore cost adds pressure. The franchise still backs the SLC's long-term plan for their star player.
But it seems hard to ignore how much this move could affect team dynamics. Building a versatile squad now might not be enough to match the expectations that come with the price tag.
