UEFA Playoffs: 16 Teams Battle for Final 4 FIFA World Cup 2026 Spots

The lights are set to go off, the stage has been set, and the stage is ready for 16 European nations to compete in "one-game elimination" matches to determine which of the final four teams will make it to the 2026 World Cup in North America this summer.

Germany, France, and England already booked their trips to the United States, but Italy’s still stuck in limbo. After sitting out the last two tournaments, the Azzurri aren’t just wrestling with strategy; they’re fighting off old doubts. It starts with a make-or-break game against Northern Ireland.

The Format: Four Paths, No Second Chances

UEFA has split the contenders into four separate "Paths" (A to D). Each path is like a separate bracket: two semi-finals leading to one final. There are no home and away games here; it is simply 90 minutes (plus extra time if required and penalties) of pure thrilling drama.

Path A: Italy will be in the center of attention. If they get past Northern Ireland, they will have to travel to a very challenging place to play against the winner of the Wales vs. Bosnia and Herzegovina match.

Path B: A powerful story of emotion as Ukraine face Sweden on neutral soil in Valencia. The second part of the story is who will go on to face either a clinical Poland led by Robert Lewandowski or a resilient Albania.

Path C: Turkiye hosts Romania in a Mediterranean duel, while the rising stars of Kosovo have their eyes on securing their first berth at the World Cup. This will not be easy, however, as they must defeat Slovakia first.

Path D: Denmark has all the usual reasons to be favoured, but they will first need to get through North Macedonia to be able to play the final against either Czechia or Republic of Ireland.

The stakes go well beyond the field. These playoffs are the final hurdle that teams must clear before the FIFA World Cup 2026 begins on June 11.

Since there will be 16 host cities spread out in Canada, Mexico, and the USA, ready to receive the world, the four victors of these routes will be directly placed into very intense groups. As an example, the winner of Path A, let's say Italywill find themselves in Group B with the host country Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.
